A spring-fed peatland refuge in the Třeboň Basin

Rašeliniště Hovízna

Rašeliniště Hovízna is a small natural reserve in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, dedicated to the protection of an exceptional spring-fed peatland. Located northwest of the village of Ponědrážka in the Jindřichův Hradec District, the reserve lies near Švarcenberk Pond on the right bank of the historic Zlatá stoka canal, a short distance from the heart of the Třeboň Basin. The protected area is recognized for hosting one of the most valuable peat formations in the region, unusual even within a landscape already renowned for its mires and bogs. Formed around spring seeps rather than typical basin-style peat accumulation, the site functions as a natural refuge for a wide range of plant and animal species. Although small in extent, the reserve is ecologically significant within the broader Třeboň Protected Landscape Area. Its character is shaped by constantly emerging groundwater, which sustains the wet, nutrient-poor conditions that define true peatland habitat and make the site an important stronghold for bog-dependent biodiversity.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
