Cragou and Vergam Heathland and Peatland Regional Nature Reserve

The Cragou and Vergam Heathland and Peatland Regional Nature Reserve is a small but ecologically rich protected area in Brittany, northwestern France. It lies in the Finistère department, roughly twenty kilometres south of Morlaix, and spans four communes across the northern flank of the Monts d'Arrée. The reserve is composed of two separate sites, the western Cragou block and the eastern Vergam block, that together protect a characteristic Breton mosaic of wet heath, peatland, acidic flushes, stream-valley woodland, and exposed ridge rock. The reserve is administered by the conservation organization Bretagne Vivante and was formally classified in December 2008 after decades of earlier voluntary protection and ecological survey work. It is recognised at the regional level under the French UICN category IV designation and is valued primarily for the quality and integrity of its peatland and heathland habitats. Although modest in size, the reserve hosts a high concentration of rare and protected plants and animals tied to these traditional Breton landscapes, including the largest known European population of bog orchid and several nationally rare breeding bird species.
