Schachenwald

Schachenwald is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the Landkreis Kaiserslautern in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It covers roughly 64 hectares across parts of the municipalities of Hütschenhausen, Ramstein, and Spesbach. The protected area preserves a distinctive combination of sandy dune forests and alder swamp woodland sitting above a low peat-forming depression. The reserve is classified under IUCN Category IV as a Habitat/Species Management Area, reflecting its role in maintaining specific habitats and the rare plant and animal communities tied to them. Established in 1987, it is one of several small protected sites that together form the network of nature reserves in the Kaiserslautern district. Beyond its habitat value, the Schachenwald also documents the regional natural history of the area. The dunes that rise only about a meter above the surrounding bog originated from sand drift over the local Buntsandstein (Lower Triassic sandstone) ridge, leaving a small but characteristic geological signature in the landscape.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
