Skawina Meadow Area

The Skawina Meadow Area is a small Natura 2000 site of Community importance in the Lesser Poland region of southern Poland. Designated under the code PLH120079, it covers approximately 44 hectares of semi-natural meadows in the southwestern outskirts of Kraków and a small adjoining section of the town of Skawina. The site's defining value lies in its surviving patches of wet, variable-moisture Molinia meadows, a habitat type that has become increasingly rare in the Polish lowlands due to intensification of agriculture and urban encroachment. Most of the area lies within the Bielańsko-Tyniecki Landscape Park, where it forms part of a broader mosaic of meadow, woodland, and river-influenced habitats south of the Vistula. Its protection is tied directly to the presence of several rare and legally protected butterfly species, for which the meadows serve as both habitat and breeding ground. Although modest in size, the site is regionally significant because it preserves traditional, extensively managed meadow communities within easy reach of a large urban population.
