Spring Mountains National Recreation Area

Spring Mountains National Recreation Area is a large federally protected mountain landscape in southern Nevada, administered by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It sits just west of Las Vegas, spanning portions of Clark and Nye counties, and rises dramatically from low desert meadows at roughly 3,000 feet to the alpine summit of Mount Charleston at nearly 12,000 feet. The recreation area encompasses more than 316,000 acres of rugged topography, including forested canyons, rocky ridges, and high peaks that create a cool, green counterpoint to the Mojave Desert below. Its combination of elevation change, ecological diversity, and easy access from a major urban area makes it one of the most distinctive protected landscapes in the American Southwest. Designated by Congress in 1993, the area preserves habitat for several threatened and sensitive species, supports the Mount Charleston Wilderness, and provides outdoor recreation ranging from hiking and picnicking to skiing and mountain biking. Adjacent to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, it forms a key natural anchor on the western edge of the Las Vegas metropolitan region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
