Šumava National Park

Šumava National Park is the largest national park in the Czech Republic, spanning approximately 685 square kilometres along the country's southwestern border with Germany and Austria. The park protects the heart of the Bohemian Forest (Šumava), the most extensive forest complex in Central Europe. This mountain range, one of the oldest in middle Europe, features a landscape of rolling plateaux, glacial lakes, and vast raised peat bogs that form a unique mosaic of habitats. The park was established in 1991 from the core of a previously protected landscape area dating to 1963, and was designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1990. The region remained largely uninhabited for decades following the post-World War II expulsion of German-speaking residents and the creation of the Iron Curtain border zone, allowing natural processes to proceed with minimal human disturbance.
