Tatra National Park
Tatra National Park (Tatrzański Park Narodowy or TPN) is Poland's premier Alpine protected area, encompassing the Polish portion of the Tatra Mountains along the border with Slovakia in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. The park covers approximately 212 square kilometers of dramatic high-mountain terrain, protecting the only Alpine-type landscape in Poland and serving as a critical refuge for species found nowhere else in the country. The Tatra Mountains form the westernmost extension of the Carpathian arc, with the park headquarters located in the nearby town of Zakopane, the principal gateway to this mountain realm. The park protects an exceptional diversity of habitats arranged in distinct altitudinal zones, from forested lower slopes through spruce forests, alpine meadows, and krummholz zones up to bare rock and permanent snow fields. This vertical zonation creates remarkable ecological variety within a relatively compact area. The landscape is characterized by sharp-edged granite peaks, deep glacial valleys, over thirty mountain lakes known locally as staw, and an extensive cave system. Poland's highest mountain, Rysy at 2,499 meters, rises within the park's boundaries, offering spectacular views of the glacial landscape. Tatra National Park holds significant international recognition as part of a transboundary biosphere reserve designated by UNESCO in 1992, encompassing both the Polish and Slovak protected areas. The park also protects Ramsar-listed wetlands, recognizing the importance of its glacial lakes and peat bogs. This international cooperation reflects the shared ecological heritage of the Tatra range and the commitment to preserving one of Europe's most significant mountain ecosystems.
