Tengku Hassanal Wildlife Reserve

Tengku Hassanal Wildlife Reserve is one of the largest protected wildlife areas in Peninsular Malaysia, covering roughly 605 square kilometers of forested landscape in the central state of Pahang. The reserve lies within the Titiwangsa Mountains and spans the districts of Temerloh, Jerantut, and Raub, with Temerloh containing the largest portion of its territory. It was first established under British colonial administration and is today managed by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) as a stronghold for the gaur, the Malayan tiger, and a rich community of primates, bats, and forest birds. The reserve is defined by an exceptionally large block of lowland dipterocarp forest that rises steadily toward the summit of Gunung Benom, one of the highest peaks in Pahang. This combination of intact lowland and hill forest, combined with elevations ranging from river level to over 2,000 meters, gives the area strong altitudinal diversity. Indigenous communities, including the Jah Hut and Cheq Wong peoples, live within and around the reserve and play an increasing role in its conservation stewardship. Tengku Hassanal Wildlife Reserve also serves as a regional anchor for wildlife conservation efforts in central Peninsular Malaysia. Several major conservation centers, including the Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre and centers dedicated to the Malayan tiger and the southern gaur population, operate in and around its boundaries. Together with neighboring protected landscapes, the reserve forms a critical ecological corridor bridging central Pahang's forested highlands.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
