A valley reserve on Canberra's doorstep, rich in cultural heritage and Australian wildlife

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is a large protected valley on the fringe of Namadgi National Park, in the Australian Capital Territory of southeastern Australia. It sits just a short drive southwest of Canberra, making it one of the most accessible natural places in the region, and it is classified as an IUCN Category II protected area, equivalent to a national park in management intent. The reserve is built around a broad valley floor flanked by Tidbinbilla Mountain and the Gibraltar Range, with steep, relatively undisturbed slopes rising on either side. Lower slopes show layered evidence of Aboriginal and European land use, while the reserve itself sits on the traditional country of the Ngunnawal people. Its name comes from the Aboriginal word "Jedbinbilla", meaning a place where boys become men, reflecting its long Indigenous heritage. Tidbinbilla is notable for combining a wild Australian bushland setting with strong conservation programs for threatened species, including the northern corroboree frog, brush-tailed rock-wallaby, and eastern bettong. It also carries significant cultural value as a place with very old Aboriginal sites, nineteenth-century European homesteads, and a long history as a place where Canberrans encounter kangaroos, platypus, lyrebirds, and other native wildlife.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
