Vallée de l'Aulne

The Vallée de l'Aulne is the natural region shaped around the Aulne, a coastal river that drains much of central Finistère in Brittany, northwestern France. The valley crosses three departments, primarily Finistère but also Côtes-d'Armor around the river's source, with a few communes reaching into Morbihan. It is the third-largest river basin in Brittany by area, ranking behind the Vilaine and broadly comparable to the Blavet, and it empties into the Rade de Brest where its waters reach the Mer d'Iroise and the Atlantic Ocean. The valley is recognized as one of the core protected natural areas of Brittany. It is part of the Parc naturel régional d'Armorique and benefits from overlapping Natura 2000 designations, including the FR5300041 habitat directive site that covers roughly 3,564 hectares of the valley itself, plus larger designations over the Rade de Brest. The designation of the Natura 2000 site in 2014 reflected the presence of three species of community interest: the greater horseshoe bat, the European otter, and the Atlantic salmon. Beyond its ecological role, the valley carries a strong cultural identity rooted in Breton oral tradition. The folklorist Yann ar Floc'h collected stories from the region in the early twentieth century, gathering them later in the 1950 collection Koñchennou Bro ar Ster Aon, which preserves some of the longest recorded oral versions of tales such as the legend of King Marc'h.
