Veltrusy Natural Monument

Veltrusy Natural Monument is a protected parkland in the Lower Vltava region of Central Bohemia, in the Czech Republic. It lies on the right bank of the Vltava River, on the northern outskirts of the town of Veltrusy and adjacent to the historic Veltrusy Castle, between the town and the village of Všestudy. The site is an English-style landscape park shaped like a horseshoe around an open field, crossed by a central avenue and dotted with clumps of trees. The Mlýnský potok (also called the Všestudský náhon) flows through the park, fed by the Vltava in the southwest and rejoining the river near a motorway crossing. The protected area was established on 22 June 2013 to conserve habitats of an EU-important site that shelters two of Europe's most threatened saproxylic beetles. Conservation at Veltrusy centers on maintaining old-growth features in a managed park landscape, protecting the beetles' breeding habitat in veteran trees, and preserving the park's mosaic of avenues, ponds, marshy channels, and small architectural follies. The site sits within an already culturally significant setting, anchored by the Veltrusy Castle and its historic game enclosure.
