Wedeholz

Wedeholz is a protected forest area in the north German state of Lower Saxony. Designated as a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) since February 2019, it lies on a flat Geest hill between the towns of Verden (Aller) and Rotenburg (Wümme), spanning parts of the municipalities of Kirchlinteln in Landkreis Verden and Westerwalsede in Landkreis Rotenburg (Wümme). The reserve protects roughly 183 hectares of mixed deciduous woodland, dominated by oak forests with pedunculate oak and beech forests with European beech. Several non-native conifers and broadleaves, including Douglas fir, Norway spruce, and northern red oak, are mixed into the stands, while older parts of the forest retain a notably high share of old and dead wood, with remnants of historical wood pasture still visible. Beyond its woodland character, Wedeholz is ecologically significant for its bat populations, cavity-breeding birds, and deadwood-dependent beetle species. The eastern edge of the reserve contains small areas of transitional and floating bog as well as pine swamp forest, adding wetland habitat to the predominantly forested landscape. The site is also recognized as a Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) area of equal extent.
