Established in 2005, the park encompasses a vast tract of mountainous terrain spanning 78,837 hectares within the Serranía de los Yariguíes mountain range. The area is characterized by steep ridgelines, deep valleys, and dense forest cover that transitions from humid tropical zones at lower elevations to cloud forest ecosystems at higher altitudes. The park serves as a critical corridor for biodiversity in the Colombian Andes, protecting watersheds that feed into the Magdalena River basin and supporting ecosystems that remain among the least studied and most ecologically significant in northern South America.
