YUS Conservation Area

YUS Conservation Area is a protected area on the Huon Peninsula in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. Established in 2009 as the country's first conservation area, it takes its name from the Yopno, Uruwa and Som rivers that flow through it, and covers roughly 760 square kilometers of tropical forest, coastal environments, and high mountain terrain. The conservation area is notable for protecting one of the most important habitats of the endangered Matschie's tree-kangaroo, along with a wide range of birds, mammals and amphibians typical of New Guinea's tropical ecosystems. Rather than being governed as a strictly exclusionary reserve, YUS is built around a partnership model in which local landowners formally agree to forgo hunting, logging and mining within pledged portions of their customary land. The area's appeal lies in its dramatic vertical range, sweeping from coral reefs along the northern coast up to roughly 4,000-meter peaks in the western Saruwaged Mountains. This gradient allows lowland, hill and montane forest habitats to coexist within a single conservation landscape, making YUS both an ecological stronghold and a hub of community-based conservation in the Pacific.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
