Sutherland Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The Sutherland Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a small but historically significant protected area located in the northeast of Saskatoon, in the south-central part of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Established on 5 May 1924, it is one of the older migratory bird sanctuaries in Canada and forms part of the broader network of federal habitats managed for waterfowl and other migratory species. The sanctuary encompasses a park area, a zoo (the Forestry Farm), and an agricultural research facility (the Agricultural Crop Research Station). Within its roughly 130-hectare extent, only about 7 hectares retain native grass and shrub vegetation, making the protected patches of natural habitat especially valuable in an otherwise developed urban and agricultural setting. The sanctuary's primary purpose is to safeguard habitat for ducks, swans, and geese, providing resting and feeding grounds within an important prairie landscape. Its location on the Canadian Prairies places it within a major flyway for migratory waterfowl, giving it enduring relevance for bird conservation in central Canada.
