Until the early nineteenth century, Agger Tange and Harboøre Tange together formed a single continuous barrier, a tangen, running from Agger in the north to Harboøre in the south, separating the western Limfjorden from the open sea. This barrier protected the inner Limfjorden coast but was inherently fragile, exposed on its western side to some of the most powerful storm surges in Denmark.

That fragility was dramatically exposed on February 3, 1825, when a severe storm surge punched through the narrow neck of sand near Agger, opening a breach that became known as Agger Kanal.
