Augrabies Falls National Park occupies a unique position in South Africa's protected area network as an example of riparian ecosystems thriving within an otherwise arid continental interior. The park's defining feature is the waterfall where the Orange River, the region's major watercourse flowing from the Lesotho Highlands to the Atlantic Ocean, descends abruptly over a granite shelf in a region of minimal rainfall.
