Bergvennen & Brecklenkampse Veld

Bergvennen & Brecklenkampse Veld is a protected nature area in the municipality of Dinkelland, in the province of Overijssel in the eastern Netherlands. Formally designated as site number 46 on the Dutch list of Natura 2000 areas, it forms part of the European Union network for conserving threatened habitats and species, and was officially designated on 4 May 2013 under the EU Habitats Directive. The area is modest in size but ecologically complex, lying on the higher sandy soils typical of the Twente region and straddling the Dutch-German border. It encompasses a mosaic of weakly buffered fens, wet and dry heathlands, species-rich acidic grasslands, and oak-birch woodland, all set against a backdrop of glacially shaped cover sand ridges. The combination of varied soil chemistry and careful hydrological management makes it an important stronghold for habitats that have become increasingly rare across northwestern Europe. Although it is not a large national park in the conventional sense, the site plays an outsize role in regional conservation. Its mosaics of heath, fen, juniper scrub, and bog-myrtle thickets support rare plant communities and provide continuity with protected woodland areas on the German side of the border, giving the area real transboundary ecological significance.
