Archaeological finds on the Boyneburg hilltop indicate settlement from the late Neolithic through the Iron Age, with a Celtic refuge castle (Fliehburg) on the plateau. In the early Middle Ages the Counts of Northeim held the site; the line ended with Siegfried IV of Boyneburg. By the twelfth century the castle served as a central place for controlling royal estates between the Harz mountains and the Wetterau, and it was occasionally used as a royal court and Imperial Diet location, visited several times by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
The fortress later became a contested object between Hesse and Thuringia before passing definitively into Hessian ownership, and it gave its name to the imperial ministerial family of Boyneburg. It lost its permanent inhabitants in the fifteenth century and was reduced to a ruin during the Thirty Years' War. The lower medieval castle was protected by a neck ditch and stands at the northern edge of the older refuge castle plateau, which remains unforested today.

The north-to-south extent is close to four kilometres, while the longest southwest-to-northeast span approaches five kilometres.

Since 2016 it has been integrated into the larger Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land framework.
Its conservation significance rests on several rare combinations. Geologically, it lies within Hesse's largest active landslide zone, and the Muschelkalk rockfall cliffs are described as a geological rarity of national interest, comparable exposures being rare elsewhere in Germany. Late summer and autumn bring drier conditions that make the steeper paths easier to traverse and emphasize the contrast between the vegetated slopes and the exposed limestone cliff faces above. Winter generally offers quieter conditions, but access via the steep terrain can be limited and the dynamic geological character of the area, including occasional rock movement, is best appreciated in fair weather.
