Burrinjuck Nature Reserve

Burrinjuck Nature Reserve is a strict nature reserve on the south west slopes of New South Wales, Australia, managed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. The reserve covers more than 5,000 hectares of forested country and protects a mosaic of six distinct eucalypt-dominated forest ecosystems. It is valued both for its ecological diversity and for harboring populations of plants and animals that are listed as threatened in New South Wales, including one of only a handful of known populations of the crimson spider orchid. As an IUCN Category Ia reserve, it is managed with a strong emphasis on ecological preservation rather than mass recreation. The reserve sits near the small locality of Burrinjuck, adjacent to the better-known Burrinjuck Waters State Park and the large dam that gives the broader area its name. Its landscape ranges from gentle central slopes to steeper southern hills and includes heath shrub forests, grassy woodlands, and tall eucalypt forests on the plateau-like eastern side. Because of its proximity to Burrinjuck Dam and its inclusion of stretches of the historic Hume and Hovell Track, the reserve sits at the intersection of conservation, water catchment protection, and the cultural landscape of inland New South Wales. Ecologically, the reserve is significant for the way in which a relatively compact patch of inland southern New South Wales forest holds a wide variety of vegetation types and supports an unusually rich bird list. More than 170 bird species have been recorded there since the late 1970s, alongside a substantial mammal fauna and several threatened woodland species. This combination of high habitat diversity and a meaningful proportion of threatened species gives Burrinjuck a conservation value that extends beyond its modest size.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
