Why Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary stands out
The sanctuary is best known for being the first U.S. national marine sanctuary proposed by an Indigenous tribe, the Northern Chumash Tribal Council. It is also recognized for the meeting of warm and cold ocean currents along the Central California coast, which fuels exceptional biological productivity in waters that include kelp forests, deep-water coral gardens, rocky reefs, coastal dunes, and wetlands.
