Dassen Island

Dassen Island is a small, uninhabited South African island lying in the cold Atlantic waters of the Western Cape, roughly 10 kilometers off the coast near Yzerfontein and around 55 kilometers north of Cape Town. Flat, low-lying, and only a few kilometers across, it is a proclaimed nature reserve and, since 2019, a designated Ramsar wetland of international importance. The island is best known for its long-established breeding colony of African penguins, a species that has suffered major declines across its range. Beyond its penguin population, Dassen Island sits within a reef-framed marine environment and supports seabird life typical of the Benguela region, and its cultural history stretches back to Portuguese, Dutch, and early colonial contact along the South African coast. Its identity combines three layers: a remote and exposed oceanic island, a key node in South Africa's seabird conservation network, and a site with centuries of maritime history, including shipwrecks, lighthouses, and early European exploration of the Cape.
