Map protected geography around an ecological lake in the Saar River floodplain

Map protected-area relationships around Dillinger See across the Saar floodplain

Dillinger See occupies a former Saar floodplain channel, stretching north beside the river through an elongated lake of reed belts, tree-lined banks, shallow-water habitat, and a partly submerged island. Explore nearby Saarland protected places on the map, with their different wetland roles, locations, and designations clearly separated.

Dillinger See

The Dillinger See is an ecological lake on the western edge of Dillingen/Saar in the Saarlouis district of Saarland, Germany. It lies within the floodplain landscape of the Saar River, where it stretches from south to north and is bordered in the south by the L355 road. The lake is surrounded by dense tree and shrub cover and features extensive reed belts that shape much of the shoreline. Although relatively compact, the lake forms the core of a much larger designated bird protection area of roughly 80 hectares. Since 2004 it has been recognized as an EU bird protection area under the Habitats Directive, and habitat improvements carried out by NABU Saarlouis/Dillingen between 2006 and 2014 have reshaped the shore and the lake's island to support breeding birds and aquatic life. Today the lake is known primarily as a birdwatching site and as a quiet local recreation area for the surrounding community.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
