After a five-year interim safeguarding phase, the Thuringian State Administrative Office formally declared the area a nature reserve on 12 April 1996, securing roughly 46 hectares of calcareous dry habitat considered nationally important for orchids, bats, and insects.
In September 2000, the Thuringian Environment Ministry proposed the reserve, together with the adjacent Klosterholz und Nordmannssteine and Lienig protected areas, as part of a Fauna-Flora-Habitat site called Creuzburger Werratal-Hänge. After federal transmission and European confirmation, the sites were integrated into the Natura 2000 network with the Thuringian Natura 2000 conservation objectives ordinance of 29 May 2008, under the European site number 4927-303.
