El Cachucho Marine Protected Area: Recorded Seismic Activity and Earthquake History Catalogue

This catalogue provides a structured overview of historical earthquakes recorded in the vicinity of the El Cachucho seamount off the coast of Asturias. Users can examine documented seismic event parameters, including magnitudes, focal depths, and epicentre distances calculated relative to the marine protected area boundaries. The collection serves as an objective reference for identifying past seismic activity within this offshore sector of the Cantabrian Sea.

El Cachucho

El Cachucho, also known as the Le Danois Bank, is a large submarine seamount located in the Cantabrian Sea off the coast of Asturias, in northern Spain. Rising from roughly 4,500 meters of depth in the Bay of Biscay up to about 500 meters below the surface, this elongated feature spans roughly 57 kilometers in length and 17 kilometers in width. Its striking geological structure, combined with rich fauna and biological communities, led to its designation as Spain's first exclusively marine protected area, the Marine Protected Area of El Cachucho, under the Natura 2000 framework. The seamount lies only about 30 nautical miles from the Asturian coast and supports important commercial fisheries, yet it remained largely unexplored for decades. Its steep continental margin, deeply incised submarine canyons, and unusual assemblage of rocky outcrops and sedimentary formations create conditions of high biological productivity. El Cachucho stands as a landmark example of how Spanish marine conservation evolved beyond partially-protected coastal parks toward dedicated offshore marine reserves.
