Eschefelder Teiche

Eschefelder Teiche is a protected nature reserve in the southern part of the Leipzig district in Saxony, Germany, consisting of a chain of artificial ponds stretching westward from the town of Frohburg toward the village of Eschefeld. Covering a total area of around 562 hectares, the reserve protects a historically constructed pond landscape that has evolved into one of the most important wetland areas in the region for waterbirds. The ponds were originally created in the 18th century for fish farming associated with the nearby manor estate in Frohburg. Over time, the landscape has shifted from purely economic use to a recognized conservation area where feeding, breeding, and resting waterbirds form the core ecological value. Today it functions as a managed wildlife refuge and a destination for birdwatchers visiting the Saxon countryside.
