Faunertal

Faunertal is a small nature reserve in the southwestern Palatinate region of Germany, located in the Landkreis Südwestpfalz of Rhineland-Palatinate, just north of the village of Ludwigswinkel and extending toward Fischbach bei Dahn. The reserve stretches about 2.9 kilometers along the Dielbach, a tributary of the Sauer river, and protects a chain of historic fish ponds together with surrounding reed beds, sedge mires, and wet meadows. The protected area covers roughly 25 hectares and was formally designated as a nature reserve in 1983. Despite its compact size, Faunertal supports an unusually rich biodiversity for a Palatinate Forest landscape. Ponds that were once used for fish farming have been abandoned and now hold natural successional margins, allowing wetland vegetation and associated fauna to flourish. The site also borders busy regional roads, which makes it a focal point for local amphibian conservation efforts led each spring by volunteers. Faunertal is valued primarily for its ecological rather than scenic character. Its combination of standing water, marsh vegetation, damp grassland, and forest surroundings creates a refuge for dragonflies, butterflies, amphibians, reptiles, and waterbirds in an otherwise heavily wooded region dominated by the Palatinate Forest.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
