FFH-Gebiet Wälder der Hüttener Berge

The FFH-Gebiet Wälder der Hüttener Berge is a Natura 2000 protected area in the state of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany, located in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district on the southern slope of the Hüttener Berge, a glacial terminal moraine landscape. Covering roughly four hundred and sixteen hectares, the site is not a single contiguous forest but a mosaic of eleven separate woodland parcels, all of which belong to the state forest (Staatsforst Rendsburg) and stretch across the municipalities of Hütten, Ascheffel, Brekendorf, Ahlefeld-Bistensee, Damendorf, Klein Wittensee, and Holzbunge. The site is almost entirely covered with broadleaf woodland, dominated by woodruff beech forest (Waldmeister-Buchenwald) and lowland beech forest with woodrush (Hainsimsen-Buchenwald), along with small patches of Atlantic beech forest with holly and yew, alder-ash floodplain forest, dystrophic standing waters, and transition bog. Most of the woodlands are historical forest stands already shown on the 1805 du Plat map of the Duchy of Schleswig, giving the protected area a strong continuity of woodland cover dating back over two centuries. The forests are part of the larger Naturpark Hüttener Berge and the landscape protection area of Wittensee, Hüttener and Duvenstedter Berge. Their main conservation importance lies in preserving long-established beech forest habitats on glacial soils and connecting them through the regional biotope network, while management plans focus on converting conifer plantings to native broadleaf forest and improving the water balance of the wet forest depressions.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
