In 1987, the Nature Conservancy Council published a highly critical report on forestry practices in the Flow Country, and the following year Chancellor Nigel Lawson used the Finance Act 1988 to scrap the controversial forestry tax reliefs. This halted further damaging plantation expansion and marked a turning point in the protection of the area. The RSPB subsequently acquired large tracts in the heart of the Flow Country, removing plantations and restoring degraded ground, an effort that paved the way for later international recognition and ultimately for the 2024 UNESCO World Heritage inscription.
