Haff Réimech

Haff Réimech is a protected wetland nature reserve in southeastern Luxembourg, situated in the commune of Schengen where the borders of Luxembourg, Germany, and France meet. It occupies a wide, flat section of the Moselle River valley, between the river itself on the east and the vineyard-covered slopes of the Luxembourg wine region to the west. The reserve covers roughly one hundred hectares and is made up largely of former sand and gravel extraction pits that have filled with groundwater to create a network of about forty shallow lakes and ponds. Today it ranks among the most ecologically valuable wetlands in the country and forms part of both the international Ramsar network of important wetlands and the European Natura 2000 network of protected nature areas. Biologically, Haff Réimech is most famous as a bird reserve. Some 230 bird species have been recorded in the area, including about 90 breeding species, and the site serves as a nesting, resting, and wintering area of significant importance within the wider region.
