Holy Cross Wilderness

The Holy Cross Wilderness is a federally designated U.S. Wilderness Area in central Colorado, straddling the Sawatch Range and surrounding highlands of the Rocky Mountains. Encompassing roughly 122,797 acres across portions of Eagle, Lake, and Pitkin counties, the wilderness lies within both the San Isabel and White River national forests and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The area is named for Mount of the Holy Cross, a 14,005-foot peak whose dramatic north-face couloirs form the shape of a cross when filled with snow. Beyond this signature mountain, the wilderness includes a network of alpine lakes, glacial valleys, subalpine forests, and high ridges threaded by more than 160 miles of trails. Its sweeping terrain supports a mix of Rocky Mountain habitats and serves as a popular destination for backpacking, day hiking, and wilderness solitude. Established in 1980, the Holy Cross Wilderness combines striking mountain scenery with accessible trailheads near resort towns such as Vail, Leadville, and Avon. Its blend of iconic geology, classic Colorado alpine environment, and proximity to well-known communities in the Vail Valley make it one of the more recognizable wilderness areas in the central Rockies.
