Irish Wilderness

Irish Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area in the Ozark region of southern Missouri, within the Eleven Point Ranger District of the Mark Twain National Forest. Located in Oregon County, the area sits along the Eleven Point River landscape, and represents one of eight official wilderness areas protected in the state. The terrain is characterized by Ozark ridges, hollows, springs, caves, and a distinctive karst topography that gives the wilderness much of its scenic character. The name of the area reflects its unusual past: before it was wilderness, the land briefly supported a settlement of Irish Catholic immigrants in the years before the American Civil War. That settlement was wiped out during the war, and the area has remained largely unoccupied woodlands ever since. Today the wilderness combines that historical legacy with the natural systems of southern Missouri, including mixed hardwood forests, cave habitat, and riparian corridors that support a diverse range of wildlife. Irish Wilderness is significant both as a protected natural area and as a place shaped by American frontier history. It offers long-distance hiking and horseback riding along its trails, and is valued for the solitude, cave systems, and Ozark scenery that define much of its appeal. As part of the National Wilderness Preservation System, it represents a piece of Missouri's wild character that has been preserved at the highest level of federal protection.
