Kalltal Nature Reserve

Kalltal is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the municipality of Monschau in the Aachen city region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It protects roughly 54.5 hectares of valley landscape along the upper course of the Kall stream between the villages of Konzen and Lammersdorf, near the Belgian border. The reserve centers on an approximately two-kilometer stretch of the stream and the surrounding wet meadows, moor fragments, and forest patches that form a continuous ecological corridor. The reserve was formally designated in 1998 as part of the Monschau landscape plan, although parts of the area had already been protected under earlier nature reserve designations. It lies fully within the larger European Habitats Directive site "Kalltal und Nebentäler" and is therefore linked into the Natura 2000 ecological network. The area functions less as a dramatic landscape and more as a quiet, ecologically rich valley refuge in the northern Eifel. Its significance comes from the combination of an unmodified, gravel-bedded stream with adjacent species-rich wet grasslands and boggy patches. These habitats support a characteristic set of moisture-dependent plants as well as several protected animal species, making the small reserve an important node in the cross-border habitat network between the High Fens (Hohes Venn) and the Rur valley.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
