The reserve stretches from the southern valley floor of the Frieda, also known locally as the Zellaer Grund, through the Muschelkalk cliffs at the Brandkopf, around the wooded Schlegelsberg with the Faulunger Schranne, the Petersberg, and the Großes Hegeholz, ending in the upper valley of the Faulunger Bach. Elevations along the ridges and spurs reach roughly 440 to 460 meters. At the upper edge of the slopes, limestone cliffs form rock faces and step drops up to about 30 meters high, which create several prominent viewpoints over the valleys.
