Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley

The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley is a glacial valley in the southeast of Andorra that covers roughly nine percent of the country's total area. It forms part of Andorra's second largest watershed basin and is bordered by high mountain ridges, with the southern edge running along the Spanish border. The valley is recognized as a refuge for rare and endangered wildlife and is often described as the spiritual heart of Andorra because of its remoteness and preserved cultural landscape. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 and extended in 2006, the valley is significant not only for its natural setting but also for the evidence of continuous human use of the high Pyrenees over more than seven centuries. Terraced fields, stone dwellings, communal forests, and the remains of historic ironworking illustrate how local communities adapted to shifting climates, economies, and social structures. In 2013, a portion of the valley was also designated as a Ramsar Wetland of international importance. Because the valley is accessible only on foot, it has retained an exceptionally intact cultural and ecological character. Today it represents one of the most complete examples of how European mountain societies once shaped and lived within an alpine environment.
