Magnetic Island National Park

Magnetic Island National Park encompasses the steep, hilly interior and rugged northwestern slopes of Magnetic Island, a mountainous island lying eight kilometres offshore from Townsville in northern Queensland, Australia. The park covers approximately 39.5 square kilometres, representing about 76 percent of the island's total area. This protected area sits within Cleveland Bay on the Coral Sea coast and protects a distinctive landscape of granite ridges, eucalypt forests, and coastal heathlands that support remarkable biodiversity. The island's highest point, Mount Cook, rises 497 metres above sea level and forms a prominent landmark visible from the Townsville mainland. The park is notable for supporting one of the northernmost populations of koalas in Australia, with an estimated 800 individuals thriving in the island's eucalyptus woodlands. Beyond its terrestrial values, the park borders productive marine environments including Cockle Bay Reef, contributing to a broader coastal ecosystem that supports both terrestrial and marine species.
