Manušické rybníky

Manušické rybníky is a small protected nature monument (přírodní památka) in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic, located on the western edge of the town of Česká Lípa near the villages of Manušice and Horní Libchava. The site is a system of seven interconnected fishponds fed by the Šporka stream, accompanied by surrounding meadows, peatland remnants, and patches of pine-oak woodland. Its formal protection focuses on the conservation of the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina), along with a community of rare wetland plants and amphibians typical of Central European lowland pond landscapes. The ponds trace their documented history back to 1575, when they were part of an extensive fish-farming landscape developed under the Vartenberk lords of the Horní Libchava estate. Over the following centuries the system survived dynastic shifts, gradual drainage, and later restoration efforts, evolving into a mosaic of small water bodies, marshes, and meadow fragments. In 2012 the area was declared a protected nature monument by the Liberec Regional Authority, and in 2013 the Czech government designated the larger portion as a Site of Community Importance (Evropsky významná lokalita) within the Natura 2000 network. Today Manušické rybníky is recognized less for dramatic scenery than for its quiet ecological value: a lowland pond complex that supports amphibians, waterbirds, and bog-margin vegetation in one of the more intensively farmed regions of northern Bohemia.
