Murray Commonwealth Marine Reserve

Murray Commonwealth Marine Reserve is a large marine protected area in the Indian Ocean waters off the coast of South Australia. Stretching tens of thousands of square kilometers, the reserve encompasses deep offshore environments, submarine canyon systems, and coastal waters that together support a remarkable concentration of marine life. The reserve is closely associated with the Murray Canyon, an immense submarine canyon that drops thousands of meters below sea level and extends for more than 150 kilometers along the seafloor. This geological feature shapes the ecology of the region by funnelling nutrients upward and creating conditions favorable for diverse marine habitats. Established as part of the South-east Commonwealth Marine Reserve Network, the Murray reserve is managed by Parks Australia on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia. It is recognized for combining conservation of deep-sea environments with the seasonal presence of large migratory marine species, including the southern right whale, which uses the inshore zones of the reserve as a nursery area.
