Pfengstbach Nature Reserve

Pfengstbach Nature Reserve is a small, linear protected area in the municipality of Odenthal, within the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The reserve follows the deeply incised valley of the Pfengstbach brook, a meandering tributary of the Dhünn river in the Bergisches Land region south of Leverkusen and Cologne. The protected area centers on a near-natural meltwater valley, or Sohlental, characterized by broad meadows in the valley floor, steep wooded slopes, riparian shrub corridors along the brook, and small spring-fed side valleys. Through its direct ecological link with the larger Dhünn and Eifgenbach Natura 2000 site, the reserve supports species that depend on clean, structured brook systems, including the European brook lamprey, one of the key reasons the area was designated in 1994. Beyond its conservation role, the Pfengstbach valley also functions as a recreational and educational landscape. Marked long-distance walking routes trace its length, and interpretive panels connect the natural environment of the brook valley with the cultural history of the nearby Altenberg monastery complex, blending ecological and regional heritage into a single protected corridor.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
