Naturschutzgebiet Schluchtwald Helle

Naturschutzgebiet Schluchtwald Helle is a small nature reserve in the Hochsauerlandkreis district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located just east of the town of Winterberg. Covering around 58 hectares of steep, forested terrain, the reserve protects a near-natural ravine forest, known in German as a Schluchtwald, along with the headwater spring and upper course of the Helle stream, a tributary of the Orke river. The site is recognized both as a German Naturschutzgebiet under IUCN Category IV habitat and species management criteria and as an FFH (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) area under the European Union Habitats Directive, giving it overlapping national and European conservation status. Its ecological value lies in the combination of cool, humid ravine microclimate, old-growth forest character, moss-covered decaying wood, and species-poor but floristically distinctive understorey typical of upland stream valleys. The reserve was formally designated in 2008 through the Winterberg landscape plan by the Hochsauerlandkreis administration, and it is managed together with local conservation partners. Because the area had suffered in the past from trampling and unauthorized mountain bike use, a revised trail concept agreed in March 2025 commits to closing sensitive paths and excluding mountain bikes from the reserve altogether.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
