Established on 5 September 1988, the area covers roughly 380 hectares of varied cultural landscape that follows a section of the Neckar River, including its floodplain meadows, historical terraced vineyards, and orchard meadows on the valley's edge. The protected area spans parts of several districts, including the Ludwigsburg neighborhoods of Neckarweihingen, Hoheneck, Poppenweiler, and Oßweil, as well as the Remseck districts of Neckargröningen and Hochberg. Its central feature is the Ludwigsburg Zugwiesen, a renaturalized floodplain landscape set within a Neckar meander, which together with the surrounding vineyards, meadows and fringe forests forms a continuous local recreation area. Beyond its scenic character, the landscape protection area functions as a consistent ecological corridor along the river, preserving traditional land use, habitat connectivity for native flora and fauna, and a distinct visual landscape shaped by centuries of human activity. It remains one of many smaller protected landscapes that together define the broader Neckar basin between Stuttgart and Heilbronn.
