Officially coded PLH120019, the area lies in the Beskid Sądecki mountain range, within Lesser Poland Voivodeship, and covers roughly 57,931 hectares of forest, river valleys, meadows, and rocky terrain. The site was established in 2008 as a proposed Site of Community Importance, later recognized as an area of Community importance. It protects a wide variety of natural habitat types listed under the EU Habitats Directive, including Carpathian beech forests, upper montane spruce forests, riparian forests, mountain hay meadows, xerothermic grasslands, alpine herb communities, and small cave systems. Its landscape and ecological diversity make it one of the most significant habitat conservation areas in the Polish Carpathians. Ostoja Popradzka also supports an unusually rich fauna, including large carnivores such as brown bears, wolves, and lynx, alongside bats, amphibians, freshwater fish, and rare invertebrates. Most of the area overlaps with the Popradzki Park Krajobrazowy, and thirteen nature reserves are located within its boundaries, reinforcing its role as a core conservation zone for the Polish Carpathians.
