Ostoja Wierzejska

Ostoja Wierzejska is a small, fully forested Natura 2000 site in central Poland, set on the northern edge of Kielce within the Masłowskie Range of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. Covering just 224.64 hectares, the area was designated in 2011 to safeguard the rare Świętokrzyskie fir forest, known in phytosociological literature as Abietetum Polonicum, together with its associated beech, oak-hornbeam, riparian, and peatland habitats. The protected zone forms part of a much larger woodland complex of roughly 45 square kilometers on and around Góra Wierzejska, a quartzite ridge rising to about 375 meters above sea level. Despite the proximity of the city of Kielce, the S7 expressway, busy county roads, and active forestry operations, the forests still retain important stands of old, structurally varied trees, abundant deadwood, and a remarkable suite of rare fungi, plants, invertebrates, bats, and forest birds. Ostoja Wierzejska functions as a critical ecological corridor within the wider network of natural forest complexes of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, helping to maintain the coherence of Natura 2000 habitats across the region. Its formal conservation targets are the Świętokrzyskie fir forest habitat and the flat bark beetle Cucujus cinnaberinus, but its real significance reaches well beyond these two focal features.
