Prince Edward Islands

The Prince Edward Islands are two small uninhabited subantarctic volcanic islands in the southern Indian Ocean, administered by South Africa as a Special Nature Reserve. They sit roughly 1,770 kilometers southeast of Port Elizabeth, halfway between the equator and the South Pole, and consist of the larger Marion Island and the much smaller Prince Edward Island, separated by about 22 kilometers of ocean. Both islands rise from a vast submarine shield volcano, with Marion Island's Mascarin Peak reaching more than 1,200 meters above sea level. The cool, windy, storm-swept climate falls within the Southern Indian Ocean Islands tundra ecoregion, supporting a compact but globally significant assemblage of seabirds, seals, penguins, and a small flora of mosses, grasses, ferns, and cushion plants. The islands are internationally recognized for their ecological importance and are the core of the Prince Edward Islands Marine Protected Area, one of the largest environmental protection zones in the world. Access is restricted to research and conservation management, with only a small overwintering team of scientists and meteorologists based at the Marion Island research station.

Compare Prince Edward Islands records by date and distance

Investigate historical earthquakes around Prince Edward Islands

The Prince Edward Islands collection relates reported epicentres to the subantarctic reserve through calculated protected-area distance, keeping seismic records distinct from volcanic islands, cliffs, glacial terrain, and surrounding ocean. Dates, magnitudes, depths, localities, sources, and site distances enable historical comparison without asserting ecological effects, current risk, or recurrence.
