Red Mountain Wilderness (Utah)

Red Mountain Wilderness is a designated wilderness area in Washington County, in the southwestern corner of Utah, United States. It lies northeast of the city of St. George, bordered by Snow Canyon State Park to the east and the Shivwitz (Shivwits) Indian Reservation to the southwest. The landscape is named after Red Mountain, a prominent block of Navajo sandstone bounded by the Gunlock Fault and the Santa Clara River valley. The wilderness sits within a transitional zone where the Mojave Desert meets the Great Basin, giving its vegetation a notably mixed character. Approximately half of the protected area overlaps with the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area and the surrounding region also preserves prehistoric Southern Paiute cultural sites. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the wilderness is recognized both for its rugged sandstone scenery and its combination of desert and upland plant communities.
