Arenillas Ecological Reserve

Arenillas Ecological Reserve is a protected natural area in the southwestern corner of Ecuador, in El Oro Province near the border with Peru. It lies across the cantons of Arenillas and Huaquillas and sits within the Tumbes-Piura dry forest ecoregion, with strong biogeographic ties to the Chocó and the wider Neotropical realm. The reserve safeguards one of the most extensive remaining patches of dry deciduous forest and tropical dry shrubland on Ecuador's coast, alongside mangrove systems close to the Pacific shore. It is considered an important refuge for endemic Tumbesian species, including restricted-range birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants, and it functions both as a conservation area and as a military zone administered by Ecuador's Ministry of Defense. Because of its dry-forest and mangrove habitats, Arenillas supports high concentrations of endemic and range-restricted wildlife. It is recognized as a key site for bird conservation, particularly for threatened Tumbesian endemics, and it plays a role in regional efforts to preserve the increasingly fragmented dry forests of the Tumbes-Piura ecoregion.
