El Ángel Ecological Reserve

El Ángel Ecological Reserve is a protected natural area in the northern Ecuadorian Andes, lying within the Carchi province and the Espejo canton. It protects a vast landscape of high-altitude páramo and associated wetlands, between roughly 3,400 and 4,200 meters above sea level. The reserve is famous for its extensive stands of frailejón, a tall, sculptural Espeletia species that dominates the páramo and gives the landscape an almost otherworldly appearance. Its sponge-like soils and high rainfall make the area a critical water source for communities across Carchi province, supplying many of the region's rivers and streams. Declared a national conservation reserve in 1986 and formally established in 1992, El Ángel was later recognized as a Ramsar wetland site in 2012. It is part of Ecuador's national system of protected areas and stands out as one of the most important páramo reserves in the northern Andes.
