Rezerwat przyrody Dolina Smarkatej

Rezerwat przyrody Dolina Smarkatej is a small landscape nature reserve in southeastern Poland, established in April 2024 within the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. It protects nearly five kilometers of an unregulated, meandering section of the Smarkata river together with its tributaries, adjacent floodplain fragments, and associated forest and wetland habitats. The reserve lies within the communes of Cmolas and Majdan Królewski in Kolbuszowski County, a rural part of the historical Sandomierz Forest region, and is embedded in a broader network of protected landscapes and Natura 2000 sites. The defining value of the reserve is its intact fluvial character. The protected river corridor preserves natural meanders, undisturbed fluvial and peat-forming processes, numerous oxbow lakes, and small lowland peat bogs. Beaver activity visibly shapes parts of the channel through tree falls and small dams. The reserve is also home to several protected and ecologically valuable species, including the noble crayfish, common bladderwort, mezereon, and common bog bean. Although very recently designated and not yet opened to public visits, Dolina Smarkatej has already attracted attention as a successful example of a citizen-led conservation initiative in Poland. Its creation was driven by local naturalists who documented the site and persuaded the regional environmental authority to formalize protection, adding a new, ecologically rich river valley to the country's growing network of free-river reserves.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
