Lake Orłowo Małe Nature Reserve

Lake Orłowo Małe Nature Reserve is a small faunistic nature reserve in northern Poland, set within the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship and the broader landscape of the Masurian Plain. It lies in Gmina Nidzica, roughly 0.8 kilometers northeast of the village of Orłowo and about 10 kilometers north of the town of Nidzica. The reserve was established in 1958 with the primary purpose of protecting the European pond turtle, a reptile that depends on quiet, well-vegetated wetland habitats in this part of Poland. It encompasses the small Lake Orłowo Małe, approximately 2.3 hectares in surface area and about 2 meters deep, together with adjoining forest stands that buffer the lake and provide essential habitat structure. In 2010 the reserve was expanded from its original 4.50 hectares to its current 14.76 hectares, strengthening the protection of shoreline and woodland around the lake. This enlargement reflects the recognition that the conservation value of the site extends beyond the open water itself and into the surrounding terrestrial habitat that supports the turtle and other wetland wildlife.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
