Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve

The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve is a vast protected area in northeastern Honduras, running along the Caribbean coast through the Gracias a Dios department. Stretching around 5,000 square kilometers, it encompasses lowland tropical rainforest, mountainous interior terrain, mangrove-fringed lagoons, and the broad watershed of the Río Plátano. The reserve is one of the last strongholds of undisturbed tropical forest in Central America and forms a key segment of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor that links forests from Mexico down through the isthmus. The reserve is internationally recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1982, and has been listed as a World Heritage Site in Danger twice: from 1996 to 2007, and again from 2011 onward. Beyond its ecological value, the area is home to more than 2,000 Indigenous inhabitants representing distinct cultural groups, including the Miskito, Pech, Garifuna, and Ladino communities. The protected landscape combines biological richness, archaeological legacy, and living traditional cultures in one of the largest and most complex conservation landscapes of the Caribbean coast of Central America.
